Cabrero

Located in the mountains of Tormantos, with an altitude of 735m above sea level and covering an area of 7km2.

Its name is related to the trade or way of life of its first inhabitants.

The area has been inhabited since Neolithic times and was later invaded by Celtiberian-Vettones. These were followed by times of conquest and reconquest. Romans, Arabs and Christian generated instability in the Valle del Jerte that it caused depopulation.

After the founding of Plasencia, peace was restored in the territory by Alfonso VIII, King of Castilla, and thanks to Fuero granted to the city, several Christians to the north of Duero, mainly from Leon, settled in the mountains looking for pasture and good weather.

Originally called “Casas del Cabrero,” slowly with the necessity to take advantage of the pastures that descend down the Piornalega mountain side. For many years, the construction of the chozas de cabrero were small but later they became houses of masonry stone. It is known that the first house is located in the field (el cancho) of “Solanillo” leaving a character imprint on its surroundings. For many years it was considered a neighbourhood of Piornal, being subject to civil law and the church. In 1791 it achieved its own independence.

Mainly a livestock village in its beginnings, for many years goat herding coexisted with chestnut cultivation until the end of the 18th century when the chestnut blight disease hit the chestnut groves, creating a deep economic crisis which would later lead to the monoculture of cherries in the 20th century.

Nowadays, Cabrero is a small abundant population of lush beautiful landscape, in an unbeatable location, sheltered from the winds of the north and exposed, in winter, to the heat of the sun until it sets. The agriculture activity coexists with tourism, visitors are attracted by the mild climate and the beauty of its architecture and landscapes.
